New drive to boost skills in science, engineering, manufacturing and technology industries

DEPARTMENT FOR INNOVATION, UNIVERSITIES AND SKILLS News Release (2008/029) issued by The Government News Network on 28 May 2008 First agreement between Government and employers to beat skills shortages A new agreement between the Government and employers will deliver more skilled workers to do the jobs of the future in science, engineering and manufacturing technologies, Skills Secretary John Denham announced today. The Government will earmark £65 million from the Train to Gain budget to help Semta, the Sector Skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies in the UK, invest in the skills of the sector's workforce. Support will be tailored to meet employers' specific skills needs in these vital fields. This means part of the budget will now be available specifically to train employees who already hold GCSE or A-level equivalent qualifications (level 2 and level 3) but who need more specific, or more up-to-date, business qualifications.
